Tony Velasquez

I’m a linguist with a broad interest in people and ideas

I study social information contained in speech, and talk about language and language learning on YouTube

What I’m Up To

Language (learning) is complex.

I talk about it on my YouTube channel, @TonyTheLinguist.

I help connect PhD students to careers after they graduate.

As Co-President of the Stanford Advanced Degree Consulting Club, I’m making sure that my fellow grad students can find a way to put their research, communication, and problem-solving skills to work, even outside academia.

As Founder and Co-President of re:think, I help expose humanities grad students and postdocs to personal connections, information, and opportunities to reflect on and plan their life paths.

I research the interactional uses of speeding up and slowing down.

How fast you talk has important uses—like conveying emotion, signaling turn-taking, and managing the information flow of conversation. I’m trying to find out how exactly it does all these things.
